Even if Darren Sproles decides to hold off on retirement for another year, the Philadelphia Eagles would be better off moving on from the veteran running back.

Since coming on over in 2014 following a trade with the New Orleans Saints, Darren Sproles has been a fan favorite for the Philadelphia Eagles since his small size and blazing speed made him fun to watch.

Not to mention, Sproles has always been the kind of player who has been able to use these skills to his advantage against opponents since he would seem impossible to tackle at times.

Unfortunately, Father Time has been catching up with Sproles over the last couple of years, and while Eagles fans were thrilled to see him return last season for what seemed to be one last ride, even they seemed to know that it was time to move on.

The fact that Sproles has been limited to playing in just nine games over the last two seasons shows just how difficult it’s been at times for the running back to stay healthy, and with the running back turning 36 in June, it’s not going to get any easier.

Without question, it’s difficult to ignore the desire from Sproles to even consider the possibility of still playing at this stage in his career.

And while it may seem tempting for some Eagles fans to want to see him come back for one more year if he decides to hold off retirement once again, this simply doesn’t seem worth it for Philadelphia.

This week, it was reported that if Sproles did end up deciding to return for a 14th NFL season, he would most likely prefer to go back to a team he’s already played for, meaning the Eagles could end up being an option.

But when looking at Philadelphia’s current running back situation leading up to training camp, adding Sproles to the mix seems like it would only hold the offense back, and prevent other players from making an impact as well.

Between the trade a few months ago that led to acquiring Jordan Howard from the Chicago Bears to recently selecting Miles Sanders in the draft, the Eagles appear to be in much better position at running back when compared to last season.

So as great as it would be to see a fan favorite like Sproles back in the picture for the 2019 season, here’s to hoping that even if the veteran decides to play another year, he ends up on the New Orleans Saints or Los Angeles Chargers.
