Doug Pederson not holding Carson Wentz back exactly what Eagles need

Doug Pederson and the Philadelphia Eagles would love to see Carson Wentz return to his old ways during the 2019 season.

Without question, when it comes to members of the Philadelphia Eagles facing the most pressure to succeed in 2019, the argument can be made that no one compares to what Carson Wentz will be facing under center.

During the 2017 season, Wentz seemed to be on his way to taking home MVP honors before suffering a devastating torn ACL that even resulted the former first-round pick missing the beginning of 2018.

Like most players coming off this serious of an injury, Wentz didn’t always look sharp for the Eagles on offense, and some even believed he should have taken a little more time off instead of rushing himself back, especially since with Nick Foles there to pick up the slack.

To top it off, Wentz’s 2018 campaign ended earlier than expected after a back injury prevented him from playing in the final few games, although Philadelphia was still able to earn a trip to the Divisional Round of the playoffs before falling to the New Orleans Saints.

Now that Foles is no longer part of the picture after the Eagles allowed him to walk in free agency before joining the Jacksonville Jaguars, all eyes will be on Wentz to see if the quarterback can manage to stay healthy in 2019 while helping Philadelphia earn another trip to the playoffs.

Talent wise, the argument can be made that Philadelphia has one of the most stacked teams in the NFL heading into the 2019 season, and how far this team manages to go will fall on the shoulders of Wentz.

Sadly, there are no guarantees when it comes to Wentz returning to full strength, and until he manages to prove on the field that staying healthy won’t be a problem, the concerns are going to be there.

In what shouldn’t be considered a surprise one bit, Wentz was one of the most popular topics of discussion with OTAs getting underway this week to see how healthy the Eagles quarterback looked.

From now until Week 1 when Philadelphia kicks things off against the Washington Redskins, Wentz still has a long way to go when it comes to proving that he can stay healthy enough to be the quarterback the Eagles need to continue being a top contender in the NFC.

On a positive note, at least Philadelphia fans should be relieved to hear Doug Pederson say there are no limitations surrounding Wentz at the start of OTAs, and the head coach isn’t going to hold him back, which is the right move.

As concerning as Wentz’s health may seem, the Eagles realize that deep down, he needs all of the extra experience possible this offseason to make sure this offense is in the best position possible for the 2019 season.

By doing so, Philadelphia’s chances of making another run at the playoffs for a third year in a row seem more likely to happen.

And if Wentz manages to stay healthy enough to play in all 16 games as a result of his offseason work, maybe the Eagles will actually have what it takes to earn that second trip to the Super Bowl in three seasons.
