A new report claims an extension for Carson Wentz from the Philadelphia Eagles could take place this summer, which could be a mistake.

With Nick Foles officially out of the picture, the Philadelphia Eagles realize it’s only a matter of time before they have to address the contract situation regarding Carson Wentz, as the former first-round pick enters his fourth NFL season.

Some Eagles fans can say what they want about whether Foles should have been the one to stick around, but there’s no question that Wentz is going to be the better option in the long run.

Keep in mind that leading up to his devastating knee injury in 2017, Wentz was considered a strong candidate to win the MVP award, and Philadelphia never would have later been in position to earn the No. 1 seed in the NFC playoff picture.

But when it comes to whether Wentz is worthy of a hefty contract extension, well that’s a tricky situation that could be a fun debate over the next few months.

When looking at the type of money NFL quarterbacks make these days, Philadelphia knows they’re going to have to open their checkbook up for Wentz at some point, although the argument can be made they should stall as much as possible.

Yes, the Eagles should want to do whatever it takes to make sure Wentz is happy since the quarterback is their leader on offense, but also he needs to prove to the team that staying healthy isn’t going to be a concern moving forward after the last two seasons.

So when the report came out on Thursday that Wentz could potentially earn a new extension this summer that would pay him around $30 million per season, Philadelphia fans should be somewhat concerned.

Back in April, the Eagles made the easy decision to pick up the fifth-year option on Wentz to make sure he remains with the team through the 2020 season, meaning the team technically has two years to see if staying healthy is going to be a concern.

Even if the argument can be made that Wentz would end up costing more down the road since quarterback contracts seem to increase by the year, it would seem foolish to watch the Eagles rush to an extension already this summer when time is on their side.

Since the circumstances are much different than lost season when Wentz felt rushed to return to action, here’s to hoping that he looks sharper than ever by the time training camp rolls around after having plenty of time to recover, especially if the team does go through with the extension.
