In what should be viewed as an easy decision, the Philadelphia Eagles rewarded Carson Wentz on Monday by exercising the quarterback’s fifth-year option.

Now that Nick Foles is officially out of the picture after the former Super Bowl 53 MVP joined the Jacksonville Jaguars this offseason, all of the attention on offense for the Philadelphia Eagles moving forward will be on Carson Wentz under center.

Despite dealing with injuries over the last two seasons, there’s no question the Eagles made the right decision moving forward to go with Wentz as their quarterback since in the long run, the former first-round pick is going to be their best option.

With that being said, Philadelphia does find themselves in an interesting situation since Wentz is up for a new contract sooner rather than later.

And when looking at what some of the other quarterbacks across the NFL are making these days, the Eagles do realize it’s most likely only a matter of time before they have to open up the checkbook for their beloved franchise quarterback.

For now, Philadelphia seems to be taking the safe approach by exercising Wentz’s fifth-year option to give them a little extra time, which is the obvious smart choice to do given the situation.

While the Eagles would love nothing more than to make Wentz happy by rewarding him with a hefty long-term contract, the team also realizes the importance of taking the proper approach moving forward since they want to make sure he can stay healthy.

Luckily for Wentz, the pressure isn’t as high this offseason to rush back like last year when the main concern was whether he would be ready to go for Week 1, although Philadelphia most likely won’t feel 100 percent comfortable until they see how he looks in training camp.

Still, the Eagles deserve credit for taking the safe approach with Wentz by exercising his fifth-year option instead of jumping the gun on a hefty new deal since there is a little uncertainty at this point in the offseason.

But hopefully if all goes according to plan down the road, and Wentz can prove to remain healthy, then a new contract shouldn’t be an issue at all from the Eagles since there’s nothing they would love more.
