After surprisingly firing their head coach after a horrible 2018-19 season, the Phoenix Suns are reportedly interested in Philadelphia 76ers’ assistant Monty Williams.

Extra, extra, read all about it: the Phoenix Suns (reportedly) fully intend to make Philadelphia 76ers assistant head coach Monty Williams as their next head coach.

That’s right, while most of us were sleeping, the Suns were busy firing their head coach Igor Kokoskov, who suffered through a lone disastrous 19-63 season, and have identified Williams as their top target for their now-vacant position.

And as we already know, they are not alone.

More from Philadelphia 76ers

After returning to the bench following the passing of his wife in 2016, and an abbreviated stay in the San Antonio Spurs front office in 2017, Williams has already emerged as a front-runner for the Los Angeles Lakers head coaching vacancy, and would also be the frontrunner for the job in Philadelphia if Brett Brown doesn’t sheppard his team to the Eastern Conference Finals (as per Colin Cowherd).

All this while trying to get his team into the Eastern Conference Semi-Finals, what a week for Williams.

Though one could argue whether or not Williams is a better fit with the LeBron James-led Lakers than his most recent championship winning coach Tyronn Lue, Williams should avoid a trip to Phoenix at all cost: it’s where basketball goes to die.

While in theory, the Suns could have Zion Williams in their back pocket once Spring turns to Summer, which would give Monty his best young frontcourt prospect to shape since his tenure in New Orleans with Anthony Davis, the Suns are hire to add their eighth head coach in the last decade and change, to go along with their even more upheaval in their front office.

Simply put: the Suns are not a well-run organization, just ask Greta.

Now Williams could parlay this interest into a better offer from the Lakers, or a pay bump to remain in the City of Brotherly Love as either a head or assistant coach, but if the choice ends up being between a head coaching job with the Suns or another year at Brett Brown’s side in Philadelphia, it’s pretty safe to assume that he’d stick with what he knows, and let demand for his services continue to grow.

Next. Does T.J. McConnell have a future in Philly?. dark

After watching Lloyd Pierce get a head coaching job with the developmental Atlanta Hawks, and transform the John Collins and Trae Young-led club into a deceptively tough out despite their inexperience, it’s clear that Brett Brown’s coaching tree is going to continue to expand moving forward, but baring some sort of amazing offer, Monty Williams should seriously avoid eclipsing his future by joining up with the Phoenix Suns.
