The Philadelphia Flyers announced on Monday that Alain Vigneault will be their next head coach, which fans should be excited about.

Despite some trying to make the case that Scott Gordon deserved a chance to be the head coach of the Philadelphia Flyers after doing a decent job last season after replacing Dave Hakstol, it seemed pretty clear the team would look for someone new.

Turns out, that was exactly the case for the Flyers after the team announced on Monday Alain Vigneault would become their next coach, the 21st in franchise history.

While there are some mixed reactions from the Philadelphia fan base in regards to the hire, Vigneault’s resume alone makes this seem like an exciting hire by the organization, especially with two trips to the Stanley Cup Finals since 2011.

Most recently, Vigneault was the head coach for the New York Rangers for the last five seasons before the team decided to fire him two weeks ago as a result of missing out on the playoffs.

When taking into consideration that this marked the first time Vigneault missed out on the playoffs since taking over the job for the Rangers back in the 2013-14 season when the team reached the Stanley Cup Finals, the Flyers certainly aren’t upset by the decision.

Talent wise, Philadelphia has a great group of young players for Vigneault to work with after looking at some of the potential the team displayed this past season, and if all goes well next year, they could be playing this time next April instead of watching the playoffs from home.

Obviously, that’s always easier said than done for the Flyers since the 2018-19 season made it clear they’re a work in progress, but at least from an experience perspective, Vigneault seems like he could be the right man for the job as head coach.

Keep in mind how close Philadelphia was to sneaking their way into the playoffs towards the end of the regular season before coming up short, and if they can find a way to use that as motivation now that Vigneault is on board, the Flyers should be in good shape.
