Philadelphia Flyers earn No. 11 pick in 2019 NHL Draft
By Dan Parzych
With the lottery taking place on Tuesday, the Philadelphia Flyers found out they will have the No. 11 pick in the 2019 NHL Draft in June.
Despite barely missing out on the playoffs, the 2018-19 season was arguably a year to forget for the Philadelphia Flyers, although at least Carter Hart showed plenty of potential in times at night after the team was willing to call him up as a rookie with nothing to lose.
It was one thing to fire Ron Hextall as the general manager when things were going downhill real fast for the Flyers early on in the regular season, but watching Dave Hakstol receive the same treatment a few weeks later shows what kind of year it was in Philadelphia.
Hopefully, what took place this season will provide a little extra motivation for the Flyers heading into next year to put the team in better position to compete in the Eastern Conference.
As for what to expect in the offseason, while Philadelphia has numerous areas to fill, at least the team should feel confident in knowing they secured the No. 11 pick in the 2019 NHL Draft that will be taking place in June.
Technically, the Flyers did drop one spot, but No. 11 will still give the team plenty of great options to work with once the draft officially gets underway in June.
Of course, the draft isn’t the only thing Philadelphia will be focused on this offseason since the team will need to decide if it would be worth keeping Scott Gordon on as head coach when looking at how great of a job he did once Hakstol was let go.
Watching the Flyers fall short of reaching the playoffs has left the team with a feeling of what could have been, but Gordon deserves some credit for finishing with a winning record (25-22-4) after taking over the head coaching gig.
Sooner rather than later, Philadelphia will hopefully make a decision on Gordon so they can focus most of their attention on June’s draft since there will be plenty of great talent to choose from in the first round.
With the team earning 10 picks for this year’s draft, at least the Flyers have one great thing to look forward to this summer before the 2019-20 season officially gets underway in the fall.
