Giants back in Bryce Harper action means more bad news for Phillies
By Dan Parzych
It looks like the Philadelphia Phillies have to compete with the San Francisco Giants as well for Bryce Harper.
Despite looking like the favorites to land Bryce Harper only a few weeks ago, things have quickly changed for the Philadelphia Phillies heading into the month of March, and not in a good way.
After it seemed like a deal was likely to happen when team owner John Middleton flew out to Las Vegas to meet with Harper, the Phillies learned the news about how the star outfielder had met with the Los Angeles Dodgers as well.
When taking into consideration the Dodgers seemed like they would have an advantage over the Phillies due to allowing Harper to have an opt-out in his contract, all of those talks surrounding Philadelphia being the favorites were slowly slipping away.
In comparison, it would be easy to understand why a player like Harper would be interested in joining such a strong World Series contender at the moment to go along with the fact that California life tends to be more enjoyable for some compared to Philadelphia.
But if the Phillies thought the Dodgers could be a problem, it looks like the team may have to worry about the San Francisco Giants all of a sudden as well.
Turns out, the Giants seem willing to offer Harper a 10-year contract as well, meaning the Phillies now have to worry about two teams from the West Coast compared to before when it seemed like they just needed to hammer out some details.
Even though San Francisco finished 16 games below .500 during the 2018 season, the presence of a player like Harper would certainly put them in a much better position to compete in the National League.
As for Philadelphia, well at this point the fan base is doing their best to remain patient over letting the situation play out, but that’s always easier said than done since this situation in general has already been dragging on way too longer than it should.
Sooner or later, Harper will need to make some sort of decision over which team he intends to play for during the 2019 season, and while the other teams are obviously a major threat at the moment, here’s to still hoping the Phillies do in fact win the sweepstakes.
Otherwise, one can only imagine what the feelings towards Harper will be over the next couple of years from fans in the City of Brotherly Love.
