Philadelphia Eagles: Carson Wentz faces even more pressure with Jared Goff
By Dan Parzych
With Jared Goff helping the Los Angeles Rams advance to Super Bowl 53, Carson Wentz faces a little extra pressure with the Philadelphia Eagles heading into next season.
Whether he wants to hear it or not, Carson Wentz will be facing heavy pressure moving forward with the Philadelphia Eagles as a result of the success from Nick Foles over the last two seasons.
No matter, the Eagles have rightfully made it clear that Wentz will be their starting quarterback moving forward, and while the pressure was already high as a result of Foles, it looks like the former first-round pick will face additional pressure as well thanks to Jared Goff.
The former No. 1 pick helped the Los Angeles Rams take down the New Orleans Saints in overtime during the NFC Championship on Sunday to advance to Super Bowl 53 for what should be a tough battle against the New England Patriots.
Just like Philadelphia with Wentz, Los Angeles had high expectations for Goff back in 2016 during the draft, but watching these two develop as quickly as they have as been truly amazing for football fans to witness.
Even though Wentz wasn’t the starter around this time last year when the Eagles were putting together their first Super Bowl title in franchise history as a result of a devastating knee injury, the quarterback did play a key role in helping Philadelphia get in that position.
In other words, the Eagles and their fans know that if it wasn’t for Wentz playing on a MVP level before suffering that knee injury in December, chances are Philadelphia never would have gone on to hoist the Lombardi Trophy.
With that being said, the Rams luckily never had to deal with a situation like this at quarterback, as Goff is coming off the best season of his young career in which he threw for 4,688 yards to go along with 32 touchdown passes and just 12 interceptions.
For a quarterback that has seen his fair share of criticism at times over the last three seasons in regards to whether he was the right answer for the Rams on offense, there are plenty of reasons to be thrilled for Goff being one win away from a Super Bowl title.
If Goff and the Rams do end up defeating the Rams in the Super Bowl less than two weeks from now, Wentz will be facing an additional level of pressure heading into the 2019 season since these two quarterbacks from the 2016 draft class will always be compared.
Yes, Philadelphia was technically able to beat Los Angeles to the punch by winning the Super Bowl last year, but Goff starting and earning a win would on his own would arguably give him a slight advantage over Wentz from a comparison standout.
Hopefully for Wentz, a full offseason to recover from his back issues will put him in better position as the Eagles starter for the 2019 season since he won’t be feeling as rushed this time around.
As for where Wentz will stand in comparison to Goff, well let’s just say this will be fun to debate in less than two weeks again once Super Bowl 53 is officially in the books, and fans know the final results.
