Until any potential deal with Bryce Harper becomes official, the Philadelphia Phillies and their fans should try to keep the hype at a minimum.

Over the weekend, there was plenty of excitement surrounding the Philadelphia Phillies meeting with Bryce Harper, as the team has been fortunate enough to be considered one of the top landing spots for the star outfielder.

Even though it was difficult to look too far ahead around this time last year, the Phillies were always considered a team to be excited about when it comes to the 2019 offseason, mainly because of the potential free agents they would be in great shape to sign.

Along with Harper, Manny Machado was another name Philadelphia was keeping an eye on since they knew unlike most teams, the Phillies would have a huge advantage over being able to afford one of these two (or both) players.

As disappointing as it’s been to see the Machado talk slow down over the last week or so, there has been some recent hype surrounding Philadelphia’s meeting with Harper that took place this past weekend in Las Vegas.

To top the excitement off, Bob Nightengale recently discussed how the meeting was so successful, the Phillies have become the clear-cut favorites to sign Harper, which would be amazing for this squad on the rise.

Time will tell when it comes to seeing what kind of offer emerges from Philadelphia’s end since Harper is expected to break the bank, and will take all factors into consideration before making an official decision.

However, as exciting as it was to hear the recent news surrounding the Phillies being the obvious favorites after their successful meeting with Harper, until anything becomes official, the excitement needs to be held to a minimum.

Too many times in sports, news like this breaks to get a fan base all excited about a potential move, only to see it take a complete opposite turn to leave everyone feeling completely disappointed.

Yes, the Washington Nationals have now been viewed as a long shot when seeing all of the teams expressing interest in Harper this offseason, but also would anyone really be all that surprised if the star outfielder ended up returning to the team he’s been with all these years?

Trying to contain their levels of excitement will be difficult for Phillies fans in the coming days since this weekend’s meeting seemed to go as great as it could have been. But for the sake of avoiding possible heartbreak and disappointment, it’s time to pump the brakes just a little bit over the Harper hype until anything becomes official involving Philadelphia.
