Philadelphia Phillies aggressive approach towards Patrick Corbin seems to be working
By Dan Parzych
Talk surrounding Patrick Corbin possibly joining the Philadelphia Phillies continues to heat up.
Now that Jean Segura is officially part of the plans for the 2019 season after the Philadelphia Phillies acquired the shortstop from the Seattle Mariners, the focus seems to have shifted to the possibility of signing Patrick Corbin.
For months, the Phillies were expected to be one of the busiest teams in the offseason when looking at all of the money they have to spend. And while most of the attention has been focused on potentially going after Bryce Harper or Manny Machado, the interest in Corbin seems to be higher than ever.
Seeing how Philadelphia already has a pretty strong rotation led by Aaron Nola and Jake Arrieta, one can only imagine what kind of impact the addition with the talent level of Corbin would make.
But before imagining what that rotation would be like, the Phillies are focused on doing whatever it takes to land Corbin by being aggressive as possible.
In fact, it appears Philadelphia has sent a message to the other teams expressing interest in Corbin as well by showing money won’t be an issue to bring the star pitcher on board.
With this in mind, it doesn’t sound like the Phillies are too worried about another team like the New York Yankees out-bidding them for Corbin, which is the perfect mindset to have.
After collapsing over the final two months of last season despite being in the running for a playoff spot at the beginning of August, it became clear that Philadelphia would need to be aggressive this offseason when it comes to bringing on the necessary talent to compete.
Segura may be the most significant move made at the moment, but when seeing the approach the team is taking with Corbin along with the fact they’re still in the hunt for more star talent like Machado or Harper, this shows the team means business.
Just like the situation with Segura, the addition of another talented pitcher like Corbin could even help the Phillies in trying to convince Machado or Harper to come on as well.
If this ends up being the case, Philadelphia will have a much better shot at entering the 2019 season as a serious contender not just in the NL East, but the National League in general.
