What’s next?

So now, what is next for the Phillies? This move does not make their chances of landing Machado or Bryce Harper any less. If anything, this only increases those chances. Sources have made it clear that with Segura now in the fold, the Phillies would like Machado to play third base should he come here.

As stated prior, moving Santana will allow for the Phillies to move Hoskins back to first base. Opening up left field, a void to be filled by… possibly Harper.

Another rumor is that this deal could mean the end of Cesar Hernandez‘s time in Philadelphia. Having Segura at shortstop would likely move Scott Kingery back to his natural position of second base, which should help him out both defensively and offensively.

Hernandez has been rumored to be on the trade block for the past two offseasons and this move should up the urgency of the Phillies to move him. Hernandez offers a lot of trade value, and the Phillies should be able to get something significant in return.

Another thing to pay attention to is what the Phillies do with third basemen, Maikel Franco. If the Phillies and Machado talks continue to heat up, then expect to see Franco floated around on the market, possibly in a deal with Hernandez.

Adding Segura gives the Phillies a significant upgrade and makes them a much better team. But, the Phillies are not yet where they want to be and still have a lot of work to do this offseason. This should be just the first of many big moves to come over the next few weeks and months.
