According to a recent report, the Philadelphia Phillies reached out to the Arizona Cardinals about a potential trade for Paul Goldschmidt.

One can only imagine the high level of excitement that is expected to take place once the Philadelphia Phillies get busy during the offseason, whether it involves signing big-name players or simply pulling off epic trades.

Over the last year or so, the 2019 offseason has been circled on the calendars of Phillies fans when looking at all of the money the team could potentially spend on a star player, with Bryce Harper and Manny Machado being two names that have stood out the most.

However, it looks like that Philadelphia was also testing the waters recently with the Arizona Diamondbacks to see what it would take to land Paul Goldschmidt.

When seeing how one of the main reasons behind the Phillies being so interested in someone like Harper or Machado was due to the fact each player is the kind of power hitter the team has desperately been looking for.

As for Goldschmidt, the first baseman may not be on the same level as Harper and Machado. But when seeing how he has at least 33 home runs in four of the last six seasons, this would have been a great surprise addition for Philadelphia.

Of course, that’s the key factor with this story by saying “would have” since one report indicated on Monday how the two teams were in discussion about Goldschmidt before it fell apart.

Hearing how the deal fell apart when the Phillies tried to add Carlos Santana as part of the mix is obviously frustrating. But from Philadelphia’s perspective, if Arizona was this close to dealing Goldschmidt, the team should still take an aggressive approach since they know the interest is there.

Just the thought of Goldschmidt joining a lineup that already consists of a power hitter in Rhys Hoskins who will hopefully continue to get better with experience should put a smile on the face of any Philadelphia fan.

Even if Goldschmidt’s contract expires after the 2019 season, the Phillies are certainly in a position where they could give it a shot with him for one year to see what happens, and then make a decision later on when it comes to whether it would be worth re-signing him.

So far, Philadelphia seems to be living up to the hype of being aggressive this offseason when it comes to bringing on better talent to give them a better chance of competing for a title during the 2019 season.

Missing out on Goldschmidt stings a little, but when seeing how close the Phillies were to agreeing on a deal before, maybe there’s still hope for this to happen before he ends up elsewhere, assuming the Diamondbacks do in fact move on from him.
