The Philadelphia Eagles were hoping to receive some help in the NFC East before their showdown on Sunday night against the Dallas Cowboys.

In a matter of hours, the Philadelphia Eagles will host the Dallas Cowboys on Sunday Night Football in a game that is expected to be quite the NFC East showdown when seeing where both teams stand at the moment.

While the Eagles hope to win in order to remain one game behind the Washington Redskins in the division standings, the Cowboys look to avoid digging a deeper hole after a loss last week to the Tennessee Titans put them two games below .500 before Week 10.

Speaking of the Redskins, the Eagles were hoping to see another surprise prior to Sunday night’s game if Jay Gruden‘s squad ended up falling short on the road earlier in the day against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

Record wise, Washington was clearly the better team over Tampa Bay when seeing how the two teams compare on paper, but also Ryan Fitzpatrick and company have shown a few times this year they can in fact compete with some of the best.

Unfortunately, Sunday ended up being one of those days in which the Buccaneers missed out on numerous opportunities to put up points in the red zone that would eventually lead to the Redskins finishing on the winning end.

So instead of Philadelphia being in position to end the week on a high note by being tied with Washington if they were to escape with a win over Dallas, it looks like the defending champions will now just be looking to keep the race close to a one-game lead.

Of course, that’s always easier said than done since the Cowboys aren’t going to make things easy for the Eagles, and are arguably the more desperate team at the moment. Not to mention, Dak Prescott hopes the addition of Amari Cooper can make things complicated for Philadelphia on defense since they haven’t exactly done the best of job covering receivers for the most part in 2018.

Either way, the Eagles knew the importance of this battle with the Cowboys heading into the weekend, and the Redskins defeating the Buccaneers makes this game even more meaningful since Doug Pederson would hate to see his team fall behind two games once again.

Hopefully with an extra week off, Philadelphia comes out firing Sunday night to put themselves in a great position early on to potentially win their fifth game of the year. If not, well then the Eagles will certainly have their hands full in the coming weeks trying to catch the Redskins in what is turning into a close NFC East race.
