Temple Football: Ryquell Armstead runs all over Houston with six touchdowns
By Dan Parzych
Ryquell Armstead had a career performance on Saturday to help the Temple Owls take down the Houston Cougars on the road.
When looking at how great Anthony Russo has looked at times in recent weeks, one would think the Temple football star would have tossed at least one or two touchdowns against the Houston Cougars when seeing how many points the team put up in the 59-49 victory.
Turns out, the Owls didn’t need one of those monster games from their quarterback when seeing how Ryquell Armstead carries the way on offense during a performance that can best be described as ridiculous.
Throughout the regular season, Armstead hasn’t been shy when it comes to proving how the Temple running back can carry a heavy workload. In fact, leading up to Saturday’s game against the Cougars, Armstead had broken the 100-yard rushing mark in five of his previous six contests, showing just how valuable he’s been to the Owls on offense.
However, nothing compares to what Armstead was able to accomplish during Saturday’s win over Houston after finishing with 210 rushing yards to go along with six touchdowns on 30 carries.
That’s right, Temple watched Armstead find the end zone a total of six times to help the team improve to 6-4 on the season. Ever since the Owls lost their first two games of the season, this team has managed to kick things into full gear by winning six of their last eight games to help them become bowl-eligible for the fifth year in a row.
Back at the beginning of the season, fans never would have imagined this would be possible, but give credit to guys like Armstead and Russo for turning things around before it was too late.
Even more impressive for Temple, a win over Houston is quite a statement when considering the team only had two losses on the season prior to Saturday, and there’s no question this never would have happened if it wasn’t for this breakout performance by Armstead.
The fact that Armstead was able to match his previous rushing touchdown total in one single game says a lot about the Owls running back, and he deserves all of the credit in the world when looking at some of the injuries he was forced to overcome during the last couple of seasons.
With two games remaining in the regular season, maybe Armstead can continue to play at a high enough level for Temple to help end his senior year on a positive note. And who knows, maybe a performance like Saturday is just what Armstead needed to catch the attention of NFL scouts since plenty of teams will be looking to add running back talent in some of the later rounds.
