The Philadelphia Flyers returned to the Well Fargo Center Tuesday night for a matchup against the Western Conference San Jose Sharks in front of their home crowd.

Home openers are supposed to be joyful times for the fan base of a professional sports team. It’s the first time a team gets to take the field of play in front of their home crowd, the supporters who have been waiting an entire offseason to see how the team has progressed and to get a chance to watch the sport they love live in person.

Sometimes, home openers don’t go the way they’re supposed to go. That was especially the case Tuesday for the Philadelphia Flyers, who endured a horrendous beating at the hands of the San Jose Sharks in front of a sea of orange and black. It was the kind of performance you immediately want to forget because there really wasn’t much good that can be gleaned from the performance.

The Flyers appeared unprepared to play the game of hockey on Tuesday, and it showed on the ice and on the score sheet. There were defensive lapses, moments of shoddy goaltending, and what appeared to be just a total lack of communication on the ice, especially on the defensive side.

This was a concerning effort by the Flyers, who are out to prove that they are one of the best teams in the division this year. On Tuesday, they looked nothing like it, and made it clear there still plenty of areas in need of improvement before that can happen.
