23. San Francisco 49ers

When looking at all of the potential teams in the NFC with the chance to make a leap to becoming a playoff contender, the San Francisco 49ers are right near the top of that list, mainly because of Jimmy Garoppolo at quarterback. Acquiring the former New England Patriots quarterback in the middle of last season was the best decision the 49ers could have made in 2017 when seeing how Kyle Shanahan finally has a quarterback to build the franchise around.

Against the Detroit Lions, Garoppolo did just enough for San Francisco on offense to help his team escape with a 30-27 win after completing 18 of 26 passes for 206 yards to go along with two touchdowns. Of course, as great as it was to see Garoppolo come through on his end, one of the biggest surprise stars of the game ended up being Matt Breida at running back.

Even if most of his production came on the 66-yard run, just the fact that Breida finished with 138 rushing yards with a score on 11 carries. Losing Jerick McKinnon for the season was a crushing blow for San Francisco’s offense, but if they can get Breida to be consistent enough on a weekly basis, it will give this team a much better chance to compete.
