2018 NFL Power Rankings Week 2: Eagles barely hold off Falcons
By Dan Parzych
1. New England Patriots
Is anyone really all that surprised to see the New England Patriots begin the new season off with a win, even without Julian Edelman in the lineup as the wideout serves a four-game suspension? Throughout his career, Tom Brady has always been the kind of quarterback that can make just about any player around him better, and with plenty of talent to work with, it seemed clear this would be the case when facing the Houston Texans.
Taking advantage of Rob Gronkowski (seven catches for 123 yards with a touchdown) and Rex Burkhead (64 rushing yards on 18 carries) wasn’t really all that surprising. But Phillip Dorsett (seven catches for 66 yards with a score) seems like the player that’s going to be relied on even more over the next couple of weeks until Edelman returns from his suspension.
Adjusting in the passing game without Edelman was never a concern for New England, and seeing them play the way they did will provide the necessary confidence moving forward to continue making them the team to beat in the AFC. Not to mention, the Patriots’ defense deserves plenty of credit as well for making Deshaun Watson feel uncomfortable for a majority of the game as well when looking at how explosive of a playmaker he was at times as a rookie before suffering a torn ACL.
