2018 NFL Power Rankings Week 2: Eagles barely hold off Falcons
By Dan Parzych
7. Jacksonville Jaguars
One can only imagine how the end of last season would have been for the Jacksonville Jaguars if they didn’t blow that 10-point lead in the fourth quarter of the AFC Championship, but at least they were able to make the leap to becoming a serious playoff contender. For years, the Jaguars always seemed to be one of those teams that were always hyped up, and while the team should be one of the top in the AFC once again, there were a few questions entering 2018.
While the defense was expected to be one of the top units for a second year in a row, the pressure was on Blake Bortles to continue proving he was the right answer for Jacksonville’s offense, especially after losing Allen Robinson and Allen Hurns in free agency. Facing the New York Giants in Week 1, Bortles didn’t see his numbers stick out as much as the Jaguars would have liked to on offense, but he did come through on numerous big plays, whether it was stepping up when Leonard Fournette left with an injury or that unexpected 41-yard run.
The defense can play at a high level all they want throughout the regular season, but whether this team makes another deep run at the playoffs could fall on the shoulders of Bortles. So far, Jacksonville has no reason to complain about their quarterback situation that will hopefully only get better as the year progresses.
