Thursday looks like Christian Hackenberg’s first and only game with the Philadelphia Eagles during the preseason finale.

After winning their first Super Bowl in franchise history back in February, the Philadelphia Eagles were viewed as the team with the best quarterback situation for the most part this offseason thanks to Carson Wentz and Nick Foles.

While Wentz was playing at a MVP level before going down with a season-ending knee injury last December, Foles was the one that helped lead the offense during the Eagles epic Super Bowl run before taking home MVP honors in the game as well.

When taking all of this into consideration, it’s easy to see why Philadelphia was viewed as the team with the best quarterback situation in the NFL, although it hasn’t exactly been smooth sailing over the last couple of weeks.

Between all of the uncertainty surrounding Wentz with his injury along with Foles struggling at times in the preseason while dealing with a few injuries of his own, the quarterback position was all of a sudden a concern for the Eagles.

As part of the result, Philadelphia made the decision to bring Christian Hackenberg on board a few weeks ago to provide a little extra competition for Nate Sudfeld for the third-string quarterback. And after failing to see the football field at all this preseason for the Eagles, it looks like Hackenberg will finally get his shot on Thursday when taking on a familiar face in the New York Jets.

For obvious reasons, Hackenberg should be thrilled at the opportunity to finally get some action during the preseason finale, but also the former Penn State star is well aware that no matter how well he plays tonight, his time with the Eagles is most likely over. Since Philadelphia loves the potential with Sudfeld along with Wentz and Foles not going anywhere, Hackenberg knows he’s basically the odd-man out, which is why Thursday’s game puts him in a tough position.

With that being said, just because the Eagles are expected to move on from Hackenberg this weekend doesn’t mean his time in the NFL is coming to an end since there will most likely be plenty of teams looking for help at the quarterback position before Week 1.

A starting job may be out of the question for Hackenberg since he couldn’t even earn it as a member of the Jets, but if he plays well enough against his former team on Thursday, it may draw some interest from other teams.

So instead of battling for a roster spot, Hackenberg will most likely be taking the approach of this being an audition for him when it comes to the quarterback’s next home in the NFL. And if that does happen to be the case, maybe Thursday’s preseason finale for the Eagles will be a little more exciting than originally expected.
