Philadelphia Phillies somehow lose by 20, win by three in same day
By Dan Parzych
Thursday was quite the interesting day for the Philadelphia Phillies during a doubleheader against the New York Mets when looking at the results from both games.
After finishing their series against the Boston Red Sox on a high note Wednesday by holding on for the 7-4 win, the Philadelphia Phillies were hoping to carry that momentum over into Thursday’s doubleheader against a familiar face in the New York Mets.
Despite sitting in fourth place when it comes to the NL East standings, the Mets were coming off an impressive win of their own on Wednesday after defeating the Baltimore Orioles 16-5, meaning the Phillies needed to be prepared for their new series.
As if scoring 16 runs wasn’t already impressive enough, New York followed up that stellar performance by scoring 24 more runs in the first game against Philadelphia, which was flat-out embarrassing for Gabe Kapler‘s squad. While it’s difficult to be frustrated over just one game when looking at how long the season is, Phillies fans were furious to see Kapler handle the game the way he did, even if did admit to mistakes later on.
Following an embarrassing performance like this one, nobody really knew what to expect for Philadelphia in Game 2 after their 24-4 loss to New York since the team seemed to have given up in the first meeting.
Turns out, the Phillies managed to pull off a complete turnaround for the second outing after the offense finally came alive for a 9-6 win, making the team feel a little better about what took place earlier in the day against the Mets.
Between Rhys Hoskins hitting home runs in both games along with Jose Bautista setting a career high of seven RBIs for the Mets in Game 1, it was quite the Thursday for the Phillies when looking at the roller coaster kind of ride that took place throughout the day.
However, at the end of the day, splitting two games with a division rival is better than losing both, and when seeing how Philadelphia only trails the Atlanta Braves by 1.5 games for first place in the NL East, that’s all that matters the most.
Teams are going to put together horrible performances every now and then, so the Phillies can’t beat themselves up too much over what happened in that first game on Thursday.
At the end of the day, the best thing for the Phillies to do is focus on finishing the rest of the series on a positive note with a strong outing this weekend against the Mets.
