Philadelphia Phillies: Acquiring Justin Bour perfect right before playoff run
By Dan Parzych
With less than two months to go, the Philadelphia Phillies made a key move by acquiring Justin Bour before the playoffs get underway.
While the Philadelphia Phillies have struggled to score a single run over their two games against the Arizona Diamondbacks and San Diego Padres, at least the team is still in great shape to make a run at extending their season into October by competing for a playoff spot.
Never in a million years did anyone believe the Phillies would be in this position during Gabe Kapler‘s first season as manager since many expected them to go through a year of rebuilding, but here they are in the hunt for the NL East title.
Only time will tell when it comes to seeing whether Philadelphia has what it takes to hold off the Atlanta Braves or the Washington Nationals for the division title, but at least the team made another key move to put them in better position with Justin Bour.
The Phillies landed the power slugger on Friday in a deal with the Miami Marlins in exchange for prospect McKenzie Mills, giving the team another much-needed bat to potentially use off the bench when needed.
Seeing how Philadelphia has gone two games without scoring a single run is just one of many examples as to how their offense isn’t the most consistent thing in the world. But with players like Bour hopefully providing a necessary spark when needed, at least it will put the Phillies in better position to continue making a push for a playoff spot.
Even if he’s only hitting .227 on the season, the fact that Bour has 19 home runs to go along with 54 RBIs shows why the interest was there.
The last thing Philadelphia wants to see happen is their inconsistency on offense come back to haunt them down the road towards the end of September, so it was good to see them make this move for Bour when they did.
As for what to expect for the rest of the weekend, well let’s hope the Phillies can figure out a way to put together some runs against the Padres on Saturday and Sunday before returning home for a quick series against the Boston Red Sox.
Philadelphia has proven at times they’re capable of competing with the best, but earning a trip to the postseason is never going to happen if the offense continues to be inconsistent at times. Bour is going to solve all their problems for reasons that are obvious, but at least it shows the Phillies are at least attempting to make moves to show improvement.
