While much has been written about the Philadelphia 76ers following The Ringers expose, one question still remains: What exactly is a normal collar size?

With all of the crazy news, rumors, and theories surrounding the Philadelphia 76ers, one question has risen above all others: what is a normal collar size for a men’s shirt?

Now I know what you’re thinking, “A day ago I could have cared less about collar size on a dress shirt, but now, after The Ringer‘s brutal takedown of Bryan Colangelo, it’s all I can think about.”

Well, fear not Philly fans, for I’ve decided to take it upon myself to find out the answer to this pressing question, in a move that may ultimately decide the fate of the franchise once and for all.

What is a collared shirt?

According to Mel Magazine, the collared shirt first came into existence sometime in the 14th century, as a way to show off one’s affluence, and as the years went by, collars got more and more extravagant. By the 16th century, detachable collars were all the rage among European elites, as highlighted in the paintings of the era, with many high-class bigwigs like William Shakespeare prominently displaying their folded fortunes for the world to see.

Fast forward a few hundred years and we enter into the era of the white collar job, where men of class would dress up for work in their best three-piece suits, often with a freshly pressed white button-up collared shirt underneath Man Men-style. This trend, when coupled with the rise of the tennis-inspired Polo shirt made collars all the rage in the modern American closets of the mid to upper class.

While many things have changed over the years, one that hasn’t has been the collared shirt.

Though styles like, say, the tank top has waxed and waned in popularity, the collared shirt has remained surprisingly relevant up through the eighties, nineties, and 2000’s as the fashion statement of choice for popular frat bros of the era, the very same era from which Colangelo grow up in.

Could this era of popped collar bad boys like James Dean, Robert Downey Jr., and Rob Lowe have inspired Colangelo signature style? Probably.

How big is too big?

Now that we’ve gotten the history of the collared shirt out of the way, and highlighted why it has endured through popular culture over the last 500 years, what exactly is the normal size for the collar on a men’s dress shirt?

While I myself am not an expert on the textile industry, after scouring the internet for answers it, unfortunately, appears as though there is no one right answer as to just how big a collar should be on a shirt. Since the exact dimensions of a collar will depend greatly on the size of the shirt, it’s length, and the materials being used to make it, there is simply no golden rule for collar size.

However, there are a number of different collar styles from which to choose from when picking out a shirt, one of which will look surprisingly similar to the style typically worn by Colangelo himself.

Dubbed The Point Collar, this style is a throwback to the suits of yesteryear, as it first gained popularity in the early 21st century. Recognizable for its Gotti size and angular pointed tips, The Point Collar remains mildly relevant in 2018, though it’s apparently very popular with basketball general managers. According to GQ, such a large collar should be offset with an equally large tie, but apparently, Colangelo doesn’t feel the need to follow said convention, instead choosing to chart his own course as somewhat of a fashion pioneer.

The Lil Uzi of Dadcore if you will.

Now that this mystery has officially been clear up, one question does remain: why would a bad boy NBA executive with the wherewithal to create a small legion fake Twitter accounts have such a propensity for such a vintage style?
