Philadelphia Union: Previewing upcoming matchup against Columbus Crew

After losing three of their last four games, the Philadelphia Union hope to get back on track Wednesday night against the Columbus Crew, who have been heating up on their own. To help prepare for the game, let’s take a look at some keys surrounding the Union, as they look to pull off the win.

Goals on the Road
The Philadelphia Union have a quick turnaround from their game in Toronto, as they head to Columbus to face off against the high-flying Crew. While the Union looked rather defeated in their loss to Toronto for much of the first half, they could compete with the Canadian side. They did not however score, and that could be a big focus. No road goals, and barely any scoring at home have a fan base wondering what can possibly be done about an anemic offense.
The Lineups
It really is time for some shakeup in the usual lineup. While Ilsinho has been solid in his performances, perhaps it is the other wing where real change is needed. David Accam has looked poor throughout the young campaign, and could probably use time to think about his play. It seems likely that this will be the game for Fabinho to return to the field, and his return could open up Accam’s play, as it seems fitting to give Accam a benching for the time being.
The other questionable position is at striker. While CJ Sapong has scored twice this season, his overall play has lacked. While Jim Curtin has lacked conviction in benching him before, with a short week it might be time for Cory Burke or Jay Simpson to get the nod up front.
Keys to the Game
The Union offense is the key to the game. With such a young defense, the attacking players should be looking to score more to ease the defensive work of a young side. Fabinho’s return could help with his veteran presence beside Auston Trusty. While Trusty and Elliott have been rather solid, they have each made crucial mistakes leading to goals. There are usually growing pains in young professional’s careers, but they need to start learning from mistakes.

Player to Watch: Fabinho
This week looks like the return of Fabinho to the lineup. With strong defensive ability, the Brazilian could be a big part of shoring up the defense. That said, he also brings a lot to the attack and could be a key to opening David Accam’s game. His ability with the cross has been missed, and while Matthew Real, and Ray Gaddis are not slouches, one is too raw to be effective and the other is more suited for the other side of the field.
