In what was a tough decision, the Philadelphia Eagles announced the release of Brent Celek on Tuesday.

With the Philadelphia Eagles having to trim down their salary cap number, it’s been a busy week for the Super Bowl champions when looking at some of the moves they were forced to make, ranging from Lane Johnson re-structuring his contract to trading Torrey Smith to the Carolina Panthers. However, when it comes to the team parting ways with their longest-tenured player in tight end Brent Celek, it’s safe to say this was the decision that hurts the most for fans.

Obviously, the most important factor for the Eagles is Zach Ertz is still around for years to come since he’s the No. 1 option for this offense. But when looking at how much he’s been through since coming on board in 2007, both good and bad, Celek deserves all of the credit in the world for sticking it out with Philadelphia, as he’s always been one of the most respected players in the locker room.

Then again, what will make Eagles fans feel better about the decision is the fact that Philadelphia was able to help Celek finally earn that Super Bowl ring after 11 seasons in the NFL. And even though Celek recently indicated he would love to return for another NFL season, it will be interesting to see if the veteran tight ends sticks to that decision or simply decides to call it a career by going out as a winner.

No matter what Celek ends up deciding to do, Eagles fans will always have a special place in their hearts for the tight end, and will certainly miss his epic touchdowns celebrations, even if they didn’t happen often. As for what this means for Philadelphia, the team will all of a sudden need to consider the thought of bringing another tight end on board since Trey Burton has already agreed to sign with the Chicago Bears on a hefty deal. Luckily, the Eagles should have plenty of great options to choose from when looking at all of the talent that will be available to choose from, in both free agency, and the upcoming draft at the end of April.
