Though the Eagles secondary play has been spotty at times in the past, one position that has been rock solid for the team has been their safeties. While the starters have been great, the team could desperately use an injection of young talent into the back half of their secondary, with only Chris Maragos under contract next season.

Sure, both Malcolm Jenkins and Rodney McLeod have been incredibly consistent when they’re on the field, but when they aren’t, it shows. And because of that, the Eagles should draft a safety like Dominick Sanders to improve the depth behind the two starters.

Sanders was one of the best defenders on a stacked Bulldog defense in 2017, and getting a difference maker of that a caliber in the fifth round is only going to make an already great Eagles defense that much more prolific.

Though he isn’t the biggest defender in the game, what the 6-foot-tall Sanders lacks in height sure he makes up for in athleticism. A ball hawk in every sense of the word, Sanders picked off 16 passes in college and is always a threat to intercept a pass and bring it back for a touchdown. Questions about his size and tackling ability are what leads to his availability in the fifth round, but the Eagles could use a hard hitter like Sanders on special teams and off the bench. Though he may never be named to an All-Pro, Sanders’ athleticism could keep him in the league for what should be a long time, and his ball skills could help him see the field sooner rather than later.
