Philadelphia Eagles have all the leverage for any Nick Foles trade
By Dan Parzych
Even if Nick Foles draws a ton of interest from numerous teams, the Philadelphia Eagles have all the leverage over this potential trade situation.
With this year’s NFL Combine officially in the books, the Philadelphia Eagles will spend the next couple of weeks determining which players are worth keeping around and who should be targeted once free agency officially gets underway when the new league year begins on March 14. Not to mention, there’s a good chance the Eagles will continue hearing offers from teams expressing interest in trading for Nick Foles, even if it would take a lot of convincing to give up the Super Bowl LII MVP.
As everyone knows, it was Foles who stepped in as the hero on offense for Philadelphia during the postseason since Carson Wentz was unable to play due to a torn ACL suffered in December against the Los Angeles Rams. Despite how uncomfortable he looked for the most part to close out the regular season, Foles was able to turn things around when it mattered the most in the NFC Championship along with the Super Bowl by throwing for a combined 725 yards with six touchdowns.
Going from a backup quarterback that nobody believed in to Super Bowl MVP has been an incredible journey for Foles, and the former Arizona star will forever be a hero in the City of Brotherly Love for helping bring the city a championship they’ve desperately been waiting for. And even though the starting job will clearly belong to Wentz once he’s healthy enough to return, the only chance of Foles ending up on a different team will not only be if the Eagles receive the right offer, but also the quarterback wants it to happen.
While most quarterbacks in the situation Foles finds himself in would prefer to end up on a team where he could start, he kind of has an amazing thing going with Doug Pederson and the Eagles at the moment. Foles has already achieved the ultimate goal of earning a Super Bowl ring while taking home MVP honors in the process as well, and there’s even a chance he ends up starting in Week 1 if Wentz suffers some sort of setback during his recovery process. And even if Wentz does up starting the new season under center, Foles making millions to be the backup quarterback just in case isn’t exactly the worst job in the world.

On Monday, it was reported that a few teams had contacted the Eagles about what it would take to land Foles through a trade in the offseason, and nobody should be surprised over the fact that Philadelphia’s asking price is pretty high. In fact, for the Eagles fans that remember what Howie Roseman was able to pull off with the Minnesota Vikings when he traded Sam Bradford in 2016, what it would take for teams to land Foles isn’t all that surprising.
As Mortensen points out, Foles is the best insurance policy in the NFL at the moment, and with all of the uncertainty surrounding Wentz at the moment, they’re obviously not going to give him away for basically nothing. Plus, as mentioned earlier, when looking at everything Foles did for the Eagles in helping bring the city their first Super Bowl title, they’re clearly not going to send him anywhere without his permission.

When taking all of this into consideration, it’s kind of insane to think about the leverage Philadelphia has when it comes to the asking price for Foles since no matter what happens, the team is going to arguably have the best backup in the league or earn some really solid draft picks courtesy of a trade. Only time will tell when it comes to what the future holds for Foles in 2018, but at the end of the day, chances are he’s not leaving, and will be back wearing Eagles green, whether it’s on the sidelines as a backup or simply filling in briefly for Wentz.
