Philadelphia Eagles moving on from Curry would be tough, but right call
By Dan Parzych
According to a recent report, the Philadelphia Eagles are expected to part ways with Vinny Currey to clear up cap space.
One month ago on Sunday, the Philadelphia Eagles completed what seemed like an impossible task back towards the end of the regular season by defeating the New England Patriots to claim their first Super Bowl title in franchise history. What this team was able to accomplish despite all of the injuries to numerous key players was truly amazing, and shows just how great of a job the Eagles did as an organization from a depth standpoint.
With that being said, the NFL is still a business at the end of the day, and just like most Super Bowl champions have to deal with, Philadelphia understands it’s going to be extremely difficult to bring everyone back next season, no matter how hard they try. In fact, it appears the Eagles are already in the process of potentially making moves to clear up salary cap space, with Vinny Curry possibly being the latest victim.
Two years ago, Philadelphia and Curry agreed to a hefty five-year, $47.25 million deal to avoid the risk of the defensive end potentially signing with a different team if he hit the free agency market. And while Curry has certainly been valuable at times to the defense over the last six years, it appears the former second-round pick may be part of what is expected to be a few cuts made by the Eagles over the next week or so.
When looking at the money Curry would have made in 2018 along with the fact that Derek Barnett showed a ton of potential as a rookie, and can easily fill in, this move really isn’t all that surprising by Philadelphia. Production wise, Curry has certainly had his moments over the years, but at the end of the day, just the thought of the Eagles paying him $9 million next year would make most fans in the City of Brotherly Love cringe. But if Philadelphia can convince the defensive end to return on a different salary, this would make the situation a whole lot easier for both parties.

Even though nothing is official yet, it will be interesting to see where Curry ends up in 2018, whether it’s back in Philadelphia or with a different team. On the bright side, at least Curry was able to make some hefty money over the previous two seasons courtesy of that insane contract while earning a Super Bowl ring if this somehow ends up being the end of his time with the Eagles. For now, all Curry and Philadelphia fans can do is wait to see how this situation plays out over the next day or so to see what his status will be for 2018.
