If the Philadelphia Eagles end up losing Trey Burton in free agency, the Super Bowl champions may end up regretting their decision.

Between the timetable for Carson Wentz‘s return still being up in the air and Alshon Jeffery recently having surgery to repair a torn rotator cuff that he apparently played through all season, it’s been a crazy last couple of days for the Philadelphia Eagles. To top it off, it looks like the Super Bowl champions could be losing one of their key tight ends from the 2018 season in Trey Burton.

Matt Lombardo of NJ.com recently discussed how the Eagles apparently made an offer to the former Florida standout that he wasn’t too much of a fan of, making it seem like Burton will likely sign with a different team unless the organization comes up with a better offer. Obviously, the most important factor for Philadelphia at the tight end position is Zach Ertz being around for a few more years, but also when looking at the impact made by Burton when he did receive playing time, it’s tough not to wonder if the Eagles will regret not offering him a better deal if he does end up elsewhere.

Numbers wise (23 catches for 248 yards with five touchdowns in 2017), it’s easy to understand why Philadelphia may not want to jump the gun by overpaying Burton since while he’s appeared in 61 games over the last four years, he only has five starts to his name. But when looking at how effective he was during certain scenarios in which the Eagles needed him more involved on offense, the potential certainly seemed to be there for Burton to eventually be the reliable No. 2 tight end alongside Ertz down the road.

Just look at what Burton was able to accomplish in Week 14 when Ertz was forced to watch the sidelines, as he caught five passes for 71 yards with two scores against the Los Angeles Rams. At least for Burton, if the Eagles aren’t going to pay him the kind of money he’s looking for, chances are another team will since he seems to be the kind of player just looking for an opportunity to shine. Philadelphia may feel confident enough in finding a replacement for Burton if he does in fact end up joining another team, but for their sake, let’s hope this doesn’t turn into one of those regretful decisions.
