Philadelphia Eagles need to give Duce Staley shot at offensive coordinator
By Dan Parzych
With the Philadelphia Eagles looking to replace Frank Reich at offensive coordinator, Duce Staley deserves a chance at the promotion.
As the Philadelphia Eagles continue to enjoy the celebration of winning their first Super Bowl in franchise history, one of the next tasks surrounding the champions for the next couple of days becomes figuring out who will replace Frank Reich as offensive coordinator. Thanks to all of the drama surrounding Josh McDaniels deciding to stick with the New England Patriots instead of joining the Indianapolis Colts, Reich ended up taking the head coaching job, leaving the Eagles with a big decision to make.
Replacing John DeFilippo (Minnesota Vikings) was already expected, but Philadelphia seemed confident enough that Reich would at least be around for another season, that is until the whole McDaniels situation went down. Luckily, Doug Pederson shouldn’t have that much of a problem when it comes to finding Reich’s replacement, and if the Eagles were smart, they would strongly consider promoting Duce Staley to take over the position.
Not only has Staley been a favorite among fans from his playing days with the team back from 1997-2003, but also the current Philadelphia running backs coach has been part of the coaching staff since 2011, with those first two years spent helping coach on special teams. Most recently, Staley received high praise for the work he did this past season in helping the Eagles get the best from their trip of running backs consisting of Jay Ajayi, LeGarrette Blount, and Corey Clement, so he’s certainly made a strong case for earning a promotion from the team.
Keep in mind how difficult it can be for a team to successfully use three talented running backs since some players would get upset over seeing their production go down, but this is one of the main reasons why Staley and the Eagles were able to win the Super Bowl. Instead of focusing on using one running back, Philadelphia would take the approach of riding the hot hand in the backfield each game, and these three players certainly deserve credit for accepting this when seeing how much of an impact it truly made on offense.

At some point, Staley is going to begin drawing interest from numerous teams looking to fill a need at offensive coordinator, and rightfully so when looking at the success and respect he’s earned over the years from his players. So with the Eagles in need of an offensive coordinator along with the fact that not much will change since Pederson already calls the plays, promoting Staley seems like the wise choice.
