Even though the Sixers are looking to make moves before the trade deadline, Dewayne Dedmon is a player that needs to be avoided at all costs.

With the NBA trade deadline only a few days away, the Sixers have been one of numerous teams expressing interest in adding depth to their roster to give the team a better chance of making a late push over the next few months to possibly earn a playoff spot in the Eastern Conference. Thanks to Philadelphia having some extra second-round picks to use as trade bait, it seems like only a matter of time before a deal or two is made, but when it comes to Dewayne Dedmon of the Atlanta Hawks, the team needs to avoid the center at all costs.

Believe it or not, the Sixers are one of a few teams expressing interest in the Hawks center, according to a recent report from the Sporting News. Nothing against Amir Johnson since he’s done a phenomenal job providing Philadelphia with some extra depth on the bench, but it’s easy to understand why the team would want to consider bringing someone like Dedmon on board to have an extra big man to work with.

However, when looking at the contract situation with Dedmon since he has a $6.3 million player option for next season, this deal just seems like it wouldn’t even be worth it for the Sixers. Not to mention, there’s a good chance that Dedmon will make the decision to opt out of the contract instead of using the player option so he can test the free agency market, meaning Philadelphia would risk only having him for the remainder of this season.

If Dedmon’s production made him a significant piece to help the Sixers quest in earning one of the playoff spots in the Eastern Conference, that would be one thing. But for Philadelphia, the best option seems to be avoiding Dedmon, and focus on bringing another big man on board instead before Thursday’s deadline. No matter what, don’t be surprised if the Sixers end up being one of a few teams making numerous phone calls over the next two days to put the team in better shape for the final stretch of the regular season while trying to secure a playoff spot.
