The Philadelphia Eagles are heading to the Super Bowl and will take on the New England Patriots in a rematch of the Eagles’ last Super Bowl appearance.
For the first time in 13 years, the Philadelphia Eagles are heading to the Super Bowl! This is a place no one could have imagined the Eagles being way back in September; and even two weeks ago, a Super Bowl appearance seemed far-fetched, especially after losing quarterback Carson Wentz.
But this magical run continues and it will see the Eagles on the biggest stage of all, taking on the New England Patriots for all the glory. New England will be seeking their sixth Lombardi Trophy, while the Eagles will make their third attempt at finally getting that monkey off of their back and bring the Lombardi Trophy to Philadelphia.
The Eagles got here after squeaking out a win over Atlanta and then topping Minnesota in a completely one-sided game thanks to the dominant play of Nick Foles. New England had a blowout win over Tennessee and then beat Jacksonville thanks to a fourth-quarter comeback from Tom Brady and company.
This is a matchup of a dynasty in the Patriots, and the Eagles who have the potential to be among the NFL elite for years to come. Will Philadelphia dethrone New England and possibly take over as the league’s next dynasty? They can most certainly move in that direction with a win on Sunday night.
To help prepare for Super Bowl Sunday, let’s look at a preview of what to expect from Philadelphia and New England as they compete for the NFL Championship.
Date and Time: Sunday, February 4, 2018, at 6:30 PM
Announcers: Al Michaels, Cris Collinsworth, Michele Tafoya, and Heather Cox
Last Matchup: The last time the Eagles and the Patriots faced off was in Week 13 of the 2015 season. In that game, the Eagles traveled up to Foxborough and upset the Patriots 35-28. That game was one of those “once in a lifetime” games, as the Eagles had a blocked punt touchdown, interception return touchdown, and a punt return touchdown. But nonetheless, the Eagles saved their season for the time with that win.
Philadelphia is vastly different from that game and is a much-improved team. In 2015, it was viewed as a massive upset when the Eagles won that game. But now the Eagles have a fantastic shot at winning this game.
Last Playoff Matchup: Every Eagles fan remembers that last time these teams met up in the postseason. It was none other than Super Bowl 39 when the Patriots defeated the Eagles 24-21 thanks in large part to an extremely sloppy game from the Eagles. Honestly, that is a game the Eagles should have won, but too many turnovers ended up costing them a chance at the Lombardi Trophy.
That game is widely remembered for Andy Reid‘s poor clock management, as many Eagles fans remember the pain as Donovan McNabb and the Eagles offense slowly made their way down the field as the seconds ticked away.
Hopefully, this time around with better coaching the outcome is different, and on Sunday the Eagles will finally get a chance to get revenge 13 years in the making. Can they complete this storybook season with the franchises first ever Super Bowl Championship?
There are plenty of looming storylines surrounding this game, along with many intriguing matchups, and keys for the Eagles to win this game. Taking all of this into consideration, let’s look at what to expect come Sunday between the Eagles and Patriots to see which team has the best chance of winning Super Bowl 52.
