Nike recently released the fourth and final jerseys for each NBA team, but the new Philadelphia 76ers City jersey leaves a lot to be desired.

Nike has officially announced their fourth and final set of jerseys for the 2017-2018 season, and unfortunately for the Philadelphia 76ers, their City jersey is pretty safe.

After coming out strong with a pair of striking home and away jerseys, looking both classic and modern, and then delivering a clutch red jersey with script lettering that made its debut in the team’s Christmas day game against the New York Knicks, the fourth and final jersey of the collection made its way onto the internet, and the results are very underwhelming.

Inspired by the Declaration of Independence, the cream colored jersey features “Phila” in a script font across the front, with a throwback 76ers logo printed on the pant leg.

While older fans who remember fondly the era being referenced will surely enjoy the subtle nod to a bygone era, when compared to the other City jerseys Nike announced, it’s hard not to feel a bit disappointed.

Where other teams, like the Magic, Hornets, and Pelicans used this alternative jersey to create something sleek, modern and daring, utilizing alternative color schemes, logos and in some cases, even printed fronts, the Sixers instead chose to play it safe to their own detriment.

The 76ers are one of the leagues youngest, and most exciting teams, so choosing to utilize a throwback,18th-century vibe directly contrasts the team’s youthful energy.

While creating a jersey with “Trust the Process” on the front may have been a bit on the nose, the team could have used their alternative jersey to pay homage to a more recent Sixers legend like, say Allen Iverson, and rock the throwback black and red look he made famous in the early 2000’s.

With current star Joel Embiid paying homage to the crossover king in a recent magazine cover, it would have been an incredible passing of the torch moment to see the Sixers new stars put on a show in Iverson’s throwback style, and would have absolutely flown off the shelves.

Even though it’s just an alternate jersey and really holds no weight on the team’s future, or season as a whole, it’s unfortunate that the team chose to focus on the past and play it safe, instead of capitalizing on a chance to make a statement.
