Wentz Weekly: Carson does enough to lead the Eagles past the 49ers
By Jake Starr
In an incredibly ugly afternoon, Carson Wentz did just enough to lead the Philadelphia Eagles past the San Francisco 49ers. Here’s why in Wentz Weekly.
If any fan was told that the Philadelphia Eagles would be 7-1 at the halfway point of the season, they would surely have been overjoyed. Well, here we are, entering November and not only are the Eagles 7-1, but they also possess the best record in the NFL. And so much of their collective success can be directly credited to the MVP-caliber play of franchise quarterback Carson Wentz.
While the team’s second-year signal caller didn’t have his best day in midnight green by any means against the San Francisco 49ers, he did just enough to lead the Eagles to Week 8 victory.
For the second week in a row, the game started off very slow for Wentz and the Eagles offense. The offensive line struggled to hold up early on and that definitely impacted Carson. But this stagnation didn’t last long, as the team’s offense was finally able to breakout with a touchdown pass to a wide-open Zach Ertz late in the second quarter.
Just like in Week 7, what’s so impressive about Wentz, is that no matter how much adversity he faces early on in games, he is able to stay composed and still lead this offense to success. While this resilience won’t show up on the team’s box score, it highlights the second year signal caller’s ability to fight through adversity while remaining calm under pressure and is a big reason why the Eagles have found so much success over the first half of the season.

Like in the third quarter, when Wentz threw an untimely interception deep in the Eagles own territory. Sure, the blame could be put on Mack Hollins for possibly stopping his route early, but nonetheless, it was just a miscommunication between the quarterback and wide receiver.
But as Wentz has done so often this year, the interception did not faze him. After San Francisco found the end zone following the pick, Wentz came back out and went to work.
And on the very next drive, Wentz fired a beautiful 50-50 ball deep down the right sideline and Alshon Jeffery made a fantastic catch for a 53-yard touchdown.
At the end of the day, this will not be looked at as a fantastic performance by Wentz. Even with a shaky performance by his offensive line, the MVP favorite quarterback was able to get the job done like he has all year.
Even though the Eagles offense did not play spectacular fotball, they still managed to put up 27-points in a rainy affair, which is impressive.
Wentz was able to spread the ball out to nine different players in Week 8, highlighting that he is willing to take whatever the opposing defense gives him and will not try to force the ball to one particular receiver.

With the team preparing to face off against the Denver Broncos in Week 9, Wentz and company will need to bring their best game against Von Miller and the team’s stout defense. If the offensive line can continue to progress and give Wentz extended time in the pocket, he should be able to continue to build upon what has already been a remarkable sophomore campaign.
