Philadelphia Eagles Surviving Despite Injuries vs. Los Angeles Chargers
By Jake Starr
The Philadelphia Eagles walked off the field in Los Angeles winners of another road game to move to 3-1. All of this missing some very key contributors.
Carson Wentz and the Philadelphia Eagles were able to pull off yet another close win over the Los Angeles Chargers. Wentz looked solid and the running game produced at their best rate of the season. All in all, it was another solid win as the Philadelphia Eagles head back home next week for a game against the Arizona Cardinals.
On the defensive side of the ball, the Philadelphia Eagles were very up and down. They were able to generate some pressure early on but other than that Philip RIvers picked apart a secondary that was playing soft coverage all game. Rivers finished 22/38 for 347 yards and two touchdowns.
The past two weeks especially the Philadelphia Eagles have survived defensively despite being very banged up. Ronald Darby has obviously been out since week one and his loss is really starting to show in the secondary. Jim Schwartz has his unit playing a lot of very soft coverage, allowing opposing quarterbacks to pick them apart underneath.
The loss of Darby has most certainly impacted the Eagles secondary and against the Chargers, the absence of Fletcher Cox really had an impact. The defensive line only recorded two sacks and Philip Rivers seemed to have plenty of time on most of his throws, especially the strike to Tyrell Williams in the second quarter.
Jordan Hicks and Rodney McLeod both returned this week. While both of their presence helped the defense, it still seems this banged up defense is doing just what it can to survive.
There has to be a lot of props given to Jim Schwartz for having his unit do enough to pull out wins the past two weeks. The Philadelphia Eagles defense has most certainly bent plenty towards the end of games, but they have not broken to a point that costs the Eagles a game.
While it looks like the Fletcher Cox injury will not be long-term, the Eagles secondary will still have to make it work with two very young corners. With Ronald Darby hopefully to return in a few weeks, the secondary will have to continue to survive playing this bend but don`t break defense.
The Philadelphia Eagles defense has done a good job of doing enough to win games despite injuries. If they can hang on for a few more weeks, once the whole defense is hopefully back and healthy, then the Philadelphia Eagles can really take that jump and make a run towards the postseason.
