Sixers yet to reveal updated Nike alternate uniforms
The Sixers let loose their new home and away jerseys courtesy of Nike, but the alternates have yet to be revealed.
The famed red drop shadow has still become the major difference in the Sixers new uniforms. There was a bit out of pushback from fans, but overall the difference seems to accent the jersey well without changing the main concept of the newly created jerseys.
Blue and whites have been released, and the excitement started to veer towards the alternates. The favored red alternate is expected to make a return, while murmurs of another alternate have been sung.
This is yet another chance for me to cape for a black alternate. The Sixers tried to combine the most important eras of their history into one, and they succeeded in doing so — except in one aspect. Allen Iverson‘s early 2000s era didn’t lead to a championship, but for the younger Sixers fans it was the closest they’ve seen to it.

For the Sixers to pay homage to other eras and not show love to a time that holstered the franchise’s most polarizing player seems like a missed opportunity. The black and gold was an odd change from what has been exclusively red, white, and blue, but it was a suitable change for the time.
Sure, it might be hard to institute that gold “76ers” now that the team has shown dedication to wonderfully marketing “PHILA”. But the Sixers have carefully re-shaped their uniforms from one of the ugliest in the league (pre-stars and stripes), to one of the league’s elites. There’s no reason they wouldn’t be able to do the same with a black jersey and possibly gold and red stars.
But nonetheless, black jersey or not, the Sixers are owed two updated alternates if the murmurs hold true. Preseason is closing in, and all talks of the uniform updates have gone silent as ever. Could there be a last-minute release? Or is this a signal that no updates were made to the red alternates, besides adding the Nike symbol and the StubHub patch?
The Sixers are a promising young team who have marketed extremely well through one of the worst eras in professional sports. Yet, even with their innovative marketing strategy, they have been laggardly in some trivial aspects.
The Bucks made waves by debuting an alternate court, and have gone really retro with their alternates. Will the Sixers follow suit?
