Many backups for the Philadelphia Eagles have taken advantage of the opportunity to showcase their ability in-game action this pre-season.

The Philadelphia Eagles kicked off the 2017 campaign with a disappointing showing against Green Bay, losing 27-9. However, when the Eagles got home, newly acquired, Ronald Darby, stole the show against his former team. The Eagles got the best of the Buffalo, 20-16. Halfway through the preseason schedule, some players have already opened the eyes of some as strong backup players.

More from Section 215

Mack Hollins

The fourth-round pick, Mack Hollins, looked tough in the first pre-season game at Green Bay. He made the play of the game for the Eagles, hauling in a pass from Carson Wentz traveling across the middle of the field. He then stiff armed two Green Bay defenders to the ground en route to the end zone. Hollins ended up with 64 yards through the air that game. Though he only had one reception in Week Two’s game against Buffalo, the quarterbacks will be sure to find him. Hollins is a very reliable target with a 6’4, 221-pound frame. Hollins and Treggs will battle it out for the fourth wide receiver slot.

Bryce Treggs

Second-year wide receiver, Bryce Treggs, proved tough to defend for the Green Bay secondary. He reeled in seven receptions, totaling for 91 yards. Treggs played in nine games last year for the Eagles, mostly as a fifth, or sometimes fourth wideout, on spread formations. Look for Treggs to get more reps on tighter formations this year, not just in obvious passing situations.

Terrence Brooks

Terrence Brooks is in his second season with the Eagles, after spending his first two with Baltimore. He was claimed off of waivers at the beginning of last season. Brooks has totaled 10 tackles in his limited action so far this pre-season. That ranks sixth among all defensive backs; it also leads the whole Eagles defense. Brooks should be locked into the number three safety spot. He should see the field on third down and long, or other passing situations.

The NFL pre-season is time for teams to evaluate their players in live action, instead of practice. A player may be able to perform well during practice, but when the lights are on during game time, he is a whole different player. Backups get to fight for spots on the team, and for playing time in certain situations. Look for more names to rise up for the Eagles in the final two pre-season games.
