Philadelphia Eagles fandom can become an art form, just ask Daniel Duffy
By Chuck Booth
The artist behind an amazing piece of Philadelphia Eagles artwork took the time to chat with Section 215 about the work, what went into it and much more.
When outsiders look at Philadelphia Eagles fans, they see a fan base that has been tortured but even through countless disappointments stands by their team. This is why the Philadelphia Eagles fan base ranked in the top third of NFL fans in FanSided’s Fandom 250. While Eagles fans get a bad rap for their antics, at times, members of the fan base will rise up to produce something special.
That’s where Daniel Duffy comes in. Duffy has been an Eagles fan for almost 37 years and for him it’s a family affair with his father and his father’s father being Eagles fans. Duffy has created a piece of artwork comprised solely of the names of all 1739 people to ever make a Philadelphia Eagles roster and before you ask, no, Frank Gore was not included.
The word art that Duffy created took inspiration from ‘throw back’ logos from the 1900’s. He settled on the logo from the 80’s-90’s but has the Eagle flying from left to right:
This isn’t Duffy’s first foray into word art as he has captured iconic athletes and moments pertaining to Philadelphia Sports in his images but it is interesting to see how Duffy discovered his calling. When I asked him how he got into word art, Duffy said, “I got started on word art actually to initially impress my girlfriend (who is now my wife)!!” So there’s a message guys, chicks dig artistic talent!

While this piece includes every member of the Philadelphia Eagles through 2016, the last name written is Carson Wentz and for good reason. Wentz is the quarterback that fans believe will finally bring a Super Bowl to Philadelphia which would make him the best name to end the piece as well as the Super Bowl drought.
I also asked Duffy about his most memorable moment of being an Eagles fan to which he said,
"My most memorable moment has to be Brian Dawkins post game speech from the 2004 NFC Championship game “Give me some respect right now!” (Duffy did a piece on that!)Equally ingrained is my worst memory, the Fog Bowl vs the Bears when I was 8 years old, I couldn’t watch my first playoff game and I’ve never been more upset in my life. Inconsolable to this day."
There are many things that can go into artistic inspiration from inspiration to different life events. For Duffy, it’s clear that his sports fandom has played a large role in his artwork.
