Sixers: Meet the new kids on the block
By James Wicker
#50 pick, PF Mathias Lessort (France)
Of all the Sixers picks this year, Lessort is by far the least likely to ever play an NBA minute. I apologize for immediately coming out and saying that, but Lessort is very much a draft-and-stash who likely won’t ever play for the Sixers unless major injuries down low occur in the coming years. That’s not to say that Lessort doesn’t have some sort of potential, though.
Lessort is a very athletic player, who can run the floor and also play physically above the rim. He’s not the most gifted offensive player ever, and he’s way more reliant on his defensive toughness than anything else. With teams going smaller and smaller in the NBA these days, a guy like Lessort at 6’9″ is an option at Power Forward and even Center when playing small ball.
Next: Embiid is the Key to the Philadelphia 76ers’ Future
In 23 MPG for his team this past season, Lessort averaged 10 PPG, 7 RPG, and 1 BPG. He was one of the leaders for his team, as they won both the French Cup and FIBA Europe Cup. It never hurts to acquire a tough player with a winning pedigree, but the fact remains that Lessort is a long shot to ever slide on a Sixers jersey. A prospect to keep in mind nonetheless.
