Number five: Claude Giroux – Center, Philadelphia Flyers

Claude Giroux is not only the longest tenured player on the Philadelphia Flyers, he is the longest tenured athlete in the city of Philadelphia. He has been around since 2008, one year longer than Jason Peters.

His longevity in the city of brotherly love can be chalked up to one thing: his work ethic. Claude Giroux is the best player on the Flyers. He is constantly racing around and playing his heart out shift after shift, night after night. He’s not the biggest guy on the ice, but you wouldn’t know that based on his play. Another thing I like about his game is that he’s very unselfish and smart. He won’t fire a shot at the net if one of his teammates might have a better shot than he does. His team first mentality pairs well with his hustle, making him a fan favorite for sure.

Giroux is perennially among the top scorers in the league but doesn’t get the love that Sidney Crosby, Alex Ovechkin, or even Jonathan Toews get.

Giroux deserves to be in the top 5 of this list because of his history with the city. He’s a homegrown captain of this franchise. He was one of the lightning rods that brought the Flyers to the Stanley Cup Final in 2010. He is the heart and soul of the Flyers organization, something that tends to be overlooked when the team isn’t performing well.

The only thing keeping him from being higher is his production as of late. If Giroux can find his 2010-2014 form he would be even higher on the list. At the end of the day, Claude is one of the best athletes we have in Philly. He is a great captain for our hockey team and a better representation of Philly.
