Round 2: Dion Dawkins, OT/OG, Temple

I’m a fervent member of the “Bring Dawkins Back To Philly” camp. Either Brian or Dion would do, honestly. But let’s focus on the draft-eligible one, for now.

The Temple product had a great showing at the Combine this past week. At 314 lbs with 35″ arms, his measurables fit that of an NFL offensive tackle. His agility drills particularly impressed: for all offensive linemen in MockDraftable’s database, his 3-cone (7.30s) was in the 97th percentile, 40-yard dash (5.11s) in the 83th, and broad jump (8’10”) in the 76th. That’s an explosive, agile athlete in space.

2nd level blocking, baby.

Coming in to Indianapolis, there was chatter regarding Dawkins and a potential move to guard. It’s possible (he’s only 6’4), and I imagine he’d play just fine. But in the tape, I thought he had the skills to play at right tackle–at the very least, right tackle–in the NFL.

The Combine testing confirmed my suspicions: he has what it takes to play tackle. His mirroring drill, hip switches, kick-slide drill. They all fit the bill.

That guard fit? It helps Dawkins get on the field right away in Philadelphia, assuming G Allen Barbre and C Jason Kelce both find different homes through free agency/trades. Even if one or both remain, they’re both 30+, and T Jason Peters is 35. The Philadelphia Eagles need youth and versatility along the offensive trenches.

And at least one Dawkins in the stadium.
