Philadelphia Flyers: Mark Streit Traded to Tampa
With the deadline looming, GM Ron Hextall has made some moves to try and help the Philadelphia Flyers
The Philadelphia Flyers have traded defenseman Mark Streit to the Tampa Bay Lightning for forward Valtteri Filppula and two draft picks for this year’s draft.
Filppula is regarded as a pass-first type of player and can play both center and wing. He has 34 points this year in 59 games played. Filppula’s cap hit charges the Philadelphia Flyers $5 million for this year and next year.
The Philadelphia Flyers also retain a portion of Streit’s contract in the deal. Streit is an unrestricted free agent at the end of this year. Eating Streit’s salary may have been the ticket to the Philadelphia Flyers acquiring two draft picks from Tampa.

The two draft picks the Philadelphia Flyers received from the Tampa Bay Lightning are a 4th round pick and a 7th round conditional pick in this year’s draft.
Because of the trade, the Philadelphia Flyers had to move down a forward to create space for Filppula. The Philadelphia Flyers sent down forward Jordan Weal to the Lehigh Valley Phantoms. Weal is eligible to play in the playoffs for the minor league side since he was sent down before the end of the trade deadline.
Another part of the deal is that the Philadelphia Flyers have inherited Filppula’s no movement clause. This means that the Flyers are forced to protect Filppula in this year’s expansion draft.
The Tampa Bay Lightning then flipped Streit to the Pittsburgh Penguins for a 4th round pick in the 2018 draft.
The deal can be looked at as a win for both teams. For the Lightning, they freed up a protection spot for the expansion draft. For the Philadelphia Flyers, they received a serviceable forward that can play wing or center and a couple of draft picks.
