Philadelphia Eagles Draft | Seven Round Mock 2.0
Round 4: Ahkello Witherspoon, CB, Colorado
I’m officially on the Ahkello train, man. Toot toot.
After ripping on Lamp for his arms, let’s talk about Witherspoon’s measurables: 6’3 with great length (waiting for the official measurement from the Combine), Witherspoon will receive copious comps to the “Seattle mold of cornerbacks.” Don’t buy that.
The Seattle secondary is a physical one. The biggest knock on Witherspoon has to be his physicality. He doesn’t tackle consistently and fails to set edges in the run game. In press coverage, he uses his length effectively, but doesn’t play with any particular violence or domination.
However, in off-man and zone coverage, he possess the football acumen, instincts, and anticipation to really disrupt passing lanes. Not the fastest guy on the face of the planet, he does possess the necessary quickness to close. He led college football in pass break-ups this year, which speaks both to the separation wide receivers were able to create against him, and the length, quickness, and ball skills that bailed him out. While he may not stick to a guy, he can sure cover ground when it counts and make plays on the football.
If the Eagles improve their pass rush in the offseason, Witherspoon is the sort of corner they’ll draft. He could eliminate the short passing game, generate turnovers, and eventually develop into an effective press corner.
