The Philadelphia Union add to their already busy offseason by announcing the signing of a new player.

The Philadelphia Union have announced the signing of Haris Medunjanin, a 31-year-old central midfielder, from Maccabi Tel Aviv in the Israeli Premier League using their Target Allocated Money.

The veteran midfielder’s contract is a two-year deal with the option of a third year. Medunjanin has played in many different leagues around the world. He started his career in the Eredivisie, the first tier in the Netherlands, spending three years between AZ Alkmaar and Sparta Rotterdam.

Medunjanin played in the Super Lig in Turkey for two years with Gaziantepspor, and he played in La Liga in Spain for a combined 4 years split between Real Valladolid and Deportivo.

Recently, for Maccabi, Medunjanin recorded 56 caps with six goals in all competitions. The Bosnian-born player has recorded 55 caps and eight goals with the national team. He appeared in the 2014 World Cup when the Bosnian National team faced off against Messi’s Argentina.

Philadelphia Union Sporting Director, Earnie Stewart, had this to say about the signing of Medunjanin,

"“We are extremely happy to add a player of Haris’ caliber. Having played at the highest levels of our game, be brings both quality and experience to our midfield,” Philadelphia Union Sporting Director Earnie Stewart said. “We’re anxious for Haris to join our group as we continue to prepare for the start of the season.”"

Medunjanin joins a crowded midfield with the likes of Alejandro Bedoya, Maurice Edu, Brian Carroll, Warren Crevalle, Illsinho, and Roland Alberg. The hope is that Medunjanin, being a veteran, can translate well to the MLS game.

His skill set defines him as a playmaking holding midfielder and a free kick specialist. Many are quick to compare him to a more attacking version of former Philadelphia Union player Vincent Nogueira, but people shouldn’t. We simply don’t know if Medunjanin will play well with the MLS’ style of play.

However, that is not to put a downer on the job that Earnie Stewart is doing this offseason. The sporting director is putting together a squad that should get Philadelphia Union fans excited for this upcoming season.
