Philadelphia Union: Transfer Targets to Fill out the Roster
Nicolas Höfler (SC Freiburg)
At 26 years of age, Nicolas Höfler looks to be a commodity worth noting now due to his surging stock overseas. He is a key piece behind the recent success of his Bundesliga side SC Freiburg, who sit in eighth place of Germany’s top division after just this season being promoted after a less than ideal campaign in 2015.
Höfler’s skill set as an enforcer in his side’s attacking third has been on full display for the most part of 2016; providing numerous interceptions and chances to break the other way with a keen passing eye and quick, yet sturdy frame. Despite being just under six feet tall, the German has incredible physical traits that make him a constant presence in defending long balls over the top in addition to his speed to cut out passing lanes effectively. He’s even enjoyed success as a center back due to his discipline in front of his keeper and talents as a whole defensive wise.
A product of Freiburg’s youth system, Höfler has spent most of his career flying under the radar except for his short stint with the German U18’s. Recent injuries have kept him from gaining attention at a consistent level, but there’s little doubt in his ability as a nuisance for opposition in the heart of the pitch.
Still developing but steadily rising, he would require a designated player contract despite his contract ending this coming summer. With a known dedication to his boyhood club, Philadelphia would have to be very keen in luring a rising talent like Höfler to the United States. Yet the ultimate payoff for a player of his potential could do wonders for the Union organization.
