3.  The Playoff Berth

A team that was never supposed to make the playoffs made a fantastic run at the end of the year and snuck in. That team was the Philadelphia Flyers.

An insane run towards the end of the year, sparked by the play of goaltender Steve Mason, awarded the Philadelphia Flyers their playoff date against the Washington Capitals.

They were dispatched by the Metro Division regular season leaders in six games, but the experience was valuable. A rookie head coach and a young developing team experienced a 3-0 deficit in the playoffs. The Philadelphia Flyers managed to make it more respectable by fighting back and winning two straight games to force a game six.

The Philadelphia Flyers also learned that they had two very good goalies in their locker room with Michael Neuvirth’s performance in relief against the Caps and Steve Mason’s performance to get the Flyers in the playoffs.

Anytime you can make the playoffs that season is a success, especially if that season is considered a “rebuilding” season. Being able to play meaningful minutes in April is a great learning experience for any hockey player.
