Unfortunately for Scott Laughton his playoff experience was cut short last year due to an awkward check into the boards against the Washington Capitals. Over his short career with the Philadelphia Flyers, Laughton has been prone to injury. He is also going into his last year of his NHL entry-level contract.

Laughton, at times, has shown what he can be capable of at the NHL level. When at his best, Laughton is a speedy, gritty, and a streaky scorer. He does not project to be an 80 point guy, but a 40-50 point guy should not be out of reach for him. Consistency is an issue for him, some nights he was not even visible on the ice.

Laughton had flashes of the good player he could be during the playoffs last year. He can bring energy to the ice and a scoring touch but he has to be consistent. Either Laughton or Cousins is slated to have a bigger role this year under year two head coach Dave Hakstol.

Players like Nick Cousins jumped over him on the depth chart because of his inability to make his presence known on the ice. Laughton has the potential to be very good in the NHL. He just needs to be able to harness his potential.

Now, it is not a do or die year for Scott Laughton. He just needs to show progression and consistency or Laughton will be spending most of the year in Lehigh Valley.
