Robert Mühren – Center Forward – AZ Alkmaar

As someone who has constantly worked at improving most facets of his game, Robert Mühren has proven himself to be worthy of our attention over here in the United States. At 27 years of age, he is entering the prime of his physical condition and is looking to find a squad where he can thrive at a natural striker. He is excellent in possession and has the ability to break free inside the box to get open and score consistently while providing defensive contribution at the top whereas most strikers wait for runs to be made in counter attacking positions. His high work rate and threat on set pieces make him an ideal squad member that could thrive from the creativity of the Philadelphia Union midfield.

Nephew of legendary Dutch midfielders Arnold and Gerrie Mühren, Robert began to increase his stock when he signed for AZ Alkmaar back in 2014. And who was the sporting director that signed Mühren at that time and gave him a chance to develop his game? None other than Earnie Stewart himself. Clearly, Stewart saw something he liked in the Dutch international as his evasive 5’10” frame would provide excellent contrast for the physical play of forward C.J. Sapong at the head of the Philadelphia Union’s attacking line.

The talent is clearly there for Mühren yet has found himself in a situation that talented players find themselves in all too well: another guy on the depth chart breaks out for a record season and teams want to ride that hot streak for as long as they can. As someone merely looking for playing time in an environment he can acclimate himself with and is able to provide an immediate impact within a squad, Philadelphia is looking like the clearest choice for him should he decide to test his skills stateside.
