Philadelphia Phillies: Looking Back at Draft Picks Since 2000
By Chuck Booth
After not selecting in the 2003 draft, the Philadelphia Phillies had their first flame out in the 2004 draft in outfielder Greg Golson.
Prior to Golson’s selection, the Philadelphia Phillies had been on a good five year run with drafting first rounder’s that made the majors but alas all good things must come to an end. High school prospects are always hit or miss (hence the hesitation with Jason Groome this year) and Golson was one that didn’t pan out.
He was billed as a “toolsy” outfielder when he was drafted out of John Connally High School in Austin, Texas when he was drafted with the 21st pick in the 2004 draft. But those tools never came together in the minors.
Over his career, Golson played in 40 games split between the Philadelphia Phillies, Texas Rangers, and the New York Yankees. During that time, he compiled a slash line of .195/.214/.244
He is now playing independent baseball for the New Britain Bees where he has a slash line of .269/.374/.308. Not all prospects are meant for the majors, but at least Golson is still doing what he loves.
