Jim Bunning

Jim Bunning’s resume speaks for himself. Hall of Fame, perfect game, no-hitters and a WAR that ranks him 7th in Phillies history. Bunning is primarily known for his days with the Detroit Tigers, but in his 6 years with the Phillies he compiled 89 Wins, 65 complete games, and 23 shutouts.

Bunning was a workhorse in ways other pitchers couldn’t reach. He never had overpowering stuff but still managed to go 9 innings deep while dominating the game. In 1984, the Phillies honored Bunning by putting him on the Phillies Wall Of Fame, remembering the great work he did while in Philadelphia.

Bunning’s number 14 is just one of six retired numbers by the Phillies (including Jackie Robinson‘s 42). Bunning’s impact on the franchise is apparent, and that’s why he’s ranked 5th on our list.
